CURRENTS: New Work from the Artists of Kress Contemporary

JULY 17 - 24

Opening Reception: Thursday, July 17, 6-8 p.m.

This group exhibition, curated by HCC Arts Director Amanda Poss, brings together recent work by 14 studio artists working out of Kress Contemporary in the heart of Ybor City.

Featuring Karol Batansky, Marc Brechwald, Ashley Cantero, Dave Decker, Elizabeth Fontaine-Barr, Eileen Goldenberg, Mary-Helen Horne, Sarah Hull, Chase Parker, Carlos Pons, Lisa Ramudo, Lynn Rattray, Marilyn Silverman, and Jessica Veguez, CURRENTS captures a snapshot of this moment—who is here, what they’re making, and what their work is responding to, personally, locally and nationally.

Rather than striving for cohesion, the exhibition embraces the vibrant diversity of Ybor’s creative community. The result is a dynamic, multifaceted portrait of artistic production at Kress today—varied in medium, message, and perspective.

As Ybor City’s art scene reaches critical mass, CURRENTS offers an essential introduction to the artists shaping this cultural moment.

Tempus Projects' GRACEFUL ABANDON: BRITTANY METZ

MAY 8 - JULY 31

Opening Reception: Friday, May 16, 7-9 p.m. (members & corporate sponsors welcomed at 6 p.m.)

Brittany Metz is an installation and new media artist creating work through self-awareness that encourages introspection and contemplation. The nature of her work is meditative, with looping video effects that allow the viewer to discover connections to the images presented. Metz employs moving images, video stills, cyanotypes, altered magazines, and sculptural collages to explore the nature of our experience and perception through the interconnected concepts of time, ephemera, and present-mindedness. The bridge between these concepts spans their shared emphasis on impermanence and the importance of appreciating the present.

Metz received a BA in Studio Art from Rollins College and an MFA in Emerging Media: Studio Art & the Computer from the University of Central Florida. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and lives and works in Orlando, Florida, where she is professor of Art & Design.

Tempus Projects' VAE VICTIS: QUINTAS SUNISTRA

MAY 8 - JULY 31

Opening Reception: Friday, May 16, 7-9 p.m. (members & corporate sponsors welcomed at 6 p.m.)

Tempus Projects probes Florida’s dark side once again this summer in Quintas Sunistra. The term "Sunistra" combines "sunshine" with the Latin word "sinistra," meaning "left" or "sinister." This fusion juxtaposes Florida's idyllic imagery with its ominous realities, reflecting the state's complex natural, social, and political landscapes.

Launched in 2018, this annual juried exhibition adopts a new theme each year, inviting artists to interpret Florida’s contradictions through fresh and diverse perspectives. This year’s theme is “Vae Victis.” Vae Victis translates from Latin as “woe to the vanquished,” a phrase that reflects the challenges faced by those caught in the ebb and flow of change. This sentiment invites contemplation on the various narratives that emerge within a state characterized by both vibrancy and conflict. As Florida continues to navigate its multifaceted identity, the phrase serves as a reminder of the diverse experiences that shape our collective understanding.

Featuring Elizabeth Allen-Cannon, Raina Benoit, Neverne Covington, Vanessa Cunto, Keaton Fox, Erin E. Freeman, Mena Ganey, Mitzi Jo Gordon, Lauren Gourgues, Jim Graham, Allison Hilgert, Jordan Holm, Jenna Miller, Trinity Oribio, Anthony Palms, Anat Pollack, Scott Swenson, Brian Taylor, Susanna Wallin, and Thomas Whitworth.
